The History & Context
Led by Minister Ina Chapman of Buffalo Black Billion, the Gethsemane Baptist Church campus on Virginia Street is home to a greenhouse, community garden, and veteran garden that have become anchors of the Fruit Belt neighborhood. A longtime gardener, wife, mother, minister, and community builder, Minister Chapman and Overseer Michael Chapman have cultivated spaces where longtime Buffalo residents and New American communities alike can learn, grow, and put down roots together.
East Side Stewards serves as a community partner at Gethsemane, growing seedlings for distribution across East Side garden sites, providing hands-on agricultural education for youth, and stewarding four raised beds within the community garden.
So far we have cultivated the soil and weeded the raised beds we have been designated, transplanted over 100 seedlings, and grown over 300 plants from seed - actively being distributed across core and partner sites.
