The History & Context
The 2 acre school garden at Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School II sits at 335 Doat Street in the Schiller Park neighborhood, where the BuffSci network, a tuition-free K-12 STEM public charter school system, established its second campus serving pre-K through 5th grade students. The school carries a science-centered mission that treats hands-on inquiry as the pathway to college readiness, making its outdoor growing spaces and basement level indoor grow-space a natural extension of the classroom. Prior to 2026, these urban agricultural spaces existed with untapped potential, awaiting a dedicated program to activate them.
In early 2026, East Side Stewards formalized a partnership with Principal Brianna Lanoye. That foundation grew into the Junior Bison Summer Program, running four days a week from mid-July through early August, where elementary students learn about the environment, cultivate raised beds and build early relationships with soil, plants, and each other through urban agriculture and land stewardship.
So far we have sown hundreds of seeds and successfully grown over 100 Spring seedlings for the summer program, and with the help of our Junior Bisons we cleared the weeds from the four raised beds and topped off the soil. We will now begin transplanting and continuing care for the new Summer crops sown in the greenhouse.
