The History & Context
The Bailey-Dartmouth Community Garden was established in 2006 as a memorial to Shaquanna Terice Jackson, a young girl who tragically passed away in a house fire on the site. The community members transformed this location into a vibrant garden that honors her memory and provides a peaceful, green space for residents to gather and nurture connections. This garden symbolizes resilience and renewal, turning a place of tragedy into one that fosters community spirit and environmental stewardship.
The Tool Library played a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing this garden by organizing regular service days that brought volunteers together to clean up, plant bulbs, and engage in other beautification efforts since 2021.
We are partnering with Grassroots Gardens WNY to lease the space from the City of Buffalo. Our main goal for Bailey-Dartmouth is to engage University District residents, build-out community assets, and host ongoing service days that support stewardship of this beautiful ornamental pocket garden.
